Psychological Stress

How Stress Affects the Body and Mind

Stress refers to the effect of the failure to respond properly to a threat, including both emotional and physical ones, real or imagined.

When stress becomes chronic or overwhelming, it can develop into anxiety disorders or contribute to depression.

Stress results from a state of alarm in which the body produces adrenaline and uses short term resistance as a way to cope.

Common symptoms of stress include but are not limited to: an inability to concentrate, tension in muscles, headaches, increased heart rate, etc. While there are many causes of stress, there isn’t always a way to eliminate every stressor from your life. The best way to cope is to learn how to manage your stress.

Between therapy sessions, some people find it helpful to use apps or online tools for stress management. These might include guided meditation apps, mood tracking tools, that can help you process thoughts and feelings when you need immediate support. While these tools can be useful supplements to therapy, they work best when used alongside professional support rather than as a replacement.
