CT is a relatively short term approach to restructure the memory imprints of traumatic experiences leading to symptom-formation. Experiential techniques are used to activate the causes that underpin the symptoms and also to change the emotional response to the roots of the current problems.
CT can be applied to all disorders and presentations, and integrates the memory reconsolidation principles from new research in neuroscience. CT can be used with various forms of therapies as an integrative part of the process. Bruce Ecker is the founder and main author of CT.
What is Coherence Therapy?
Coherence therapy is based on the principle that symptoms are not random or meaningless. Instead, they are produced coherently according to unconscious mental models of reality. This means behaviours such as anxiety, depression, or avoidance often serve an important underlying purpose, even if they feel irrational on the surface.
This model was first developed by Bruce Ecker and Laurel Hulley in the 1990s and has since been expanded through clinical practice and research. The approach recognises that symptoms only dissolve when the hidden emotional truths that sustain them are revealed and transformed.

How do coherence therapy techniques work?
Experiential methods
Unlike cognitive therapies that rely heavily on rational analysis, coherence therapy techniques are experiential. Clients are guided into direct contact with unconscious emotional schemas, often through imagery, dialogue, and body-based awareness. This allows the client to feel and recognise the emotional learnings driving the symptom.
Learn about other experiential approaches, such as psychodrama and mindfulness practices, which often complement coherence therapy.
Integration with other therapies
CT is not limited to a single modality. It can be integrated with evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Hypnosis, and EMDR. This flexibility makes it a valuable part of trauma-informed practice and treatment for conditions like anxiety, PTSD, and depression.
Benefits of Coherence Therapy
- Identifies the hidden emotional truths that sustain symptoms
- Works relatively quickly compared to long-term analysis
- Creates lasting change through memory reconsolidation
- Complements other therapeutic modalities
- Effective across a wide range of issues, from childhood trauma to relationship difficulties
