What defines anxiety?
Anxiety is a state characterised by behavioural, cognitive, emotional and somatic components which creates unpleasant feelings that are often associated with worry or fear. It is a generalised state that is both psychological and physiological, occurring without a known triggering stimulus.

How anxiety differs from fear
This emotion differs from fear, which occurs when there is an external threat related to behaviours of avoidance or escape. Alternatively, anxiety is the result of perceived threats which seem unable to be controlled or avoided.
Anxiety is typically a normal reaction to dealing with stress that prompts a person to cope with a difficult situation, but when it becomes excessive it may be classified as an anxiety disorder
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, affecting millions worldwide. They involve excessive fear, worry, or nervousness that goes beyond normal stress responses and can significantly disrupt daily life.
Types of anxiety disorders
Types of anxiety disorders include generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), characterised by persistent and uncontrollable worry; panic disorder, marked by sudden and intense episodes of fear (panic attacks); social anxiety disorder, involving extreme fear of social situations or scrutiny; and specific phobias, which centre on intense fear of particular objects or situations.
These disorders often arise from a combination of genetic vulnerability, brain chemistry, personality factors, and life experiences, including trauma experiences or chronic stress. Symptoms may include restlessness, muscle tension, sleep difficulties, difficulty concentrating, and physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath.
Anxiety counselling treatment often combines psychotherapy, which helps uncover and process the origin of anxiety, with medication, relaxation techniques, and lifestyle changes.
