Personality disorders (PD) result from imperfect development of personality and reflect how that person copes with difficulties. According to DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, Fourth Edition), a PD is a pattern of inner experience and behavior that is significantly different from what is expected based on the individual’s culture. This disorder is widespread and inflexible and begins during adolescence or early adulthood, ultimately leading to distress or impairment. PDs are maladaptive patterns of perceiving and responding to others and to stressful situations.
